Diagnosis and Treatment of Neoplastic Effusions

John E. Ultmann M.D.1

1 The Department of Medicine, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and the Francis Delafield Hospital, New York City, N. Y.

Following a brief outline of the common causes of serosal effusion, the necessary steps in diagnosing an effusion due to neoplastic disease are summarized. Various modes of therapy of recurrent, neoplastic effusions are discussed and reports are summarized indicating that isotopes, alkylating agents, or quinacrine offer symptomatic relief in 40 to 60% of the cases. The choice of agent depends largely on the facilities available and the experience of the physician.
