The Value of Cancer Detection Examinations

Irving A. Knight M.D.1

1 A staff surgeon at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital, Mt. Sinai Hospital, and Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Los Angeles, California.

The value of detecting certain types of cancer in its early stages has been emphasized by the presentation of factual data from several Centers where cancer detection examinations are conducted. The importance of motivating the patient to present himself for an annual examination has been stressed, and for the doctor to perform a careful survey in order to detect the preinvasive lesion in the asymptomatic patient. At this stage, proper treatment will most certainly result in a higher cure rate than is otherwise achieved.
