Early Diagnosis in Colon and Rectal Cancer

Sherman A. Eger M.D.1

1 Clinical Professor of Surgery, The Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Earlier diagnosis is urgently needed to improve the over-all survival and cure rates in cancer of the large intestine. This can be accomplished by (1) physicians recognizing the earliest manifestations of this disease rather than waiting for the late ones to develop; (2) by recommending prompt use of the sigmoidoscope and colon X-ray in suspected cases as well as the more frequent use of sigmoidoscopy in non-suspected cases as part of a complete physical examination; (3) by surgeons examining the colon routinely during laparotomy; and (4) by the public becoming better informed of all of these factors.
