The Early Diagnosis of Breast Cancer
Thomas W. Botsford M.D.1

The techniques for the detection of breast cancer investigated and under study have been outlined. Some of them, thermography and ultra sound, are sophisticated procedures that may offer much in the future. However, at present, they are not widely available and are still in the stage of investigation. Mammography is an established diagnostic tool. It is agreed by radiologists, practitioners, and surgeons that negative mammography does not supersede the clinical indications for breast biopsy. A high index of suspicion for breast cancer combined with a careful physical examination constitute the most effective means of detecting cancer of the breast.
