The Value of Routine Sigmoidoscopic Examination

The routine sigmoidoscopic examination of the asymptomatic patient is essential in order to detect the premalignant and the early malignant lesion of the rectum and lower sigmoid colon. Reliance on the digital examination or even the barium enema will fail to detect a certain number of these tumors. A study of results from several centers shows the value of detection and treatment of early carcinoma in terms of increased survival rate.
