In summary, no general rule can be applied for the recommended frequency of cytological examinations. Based on this survey of two widely contrasted populations, repetition of cytology examinations might be recommended as often as three months, or in some groups, could be as infrequent as every three years. Clearly, the need must be individualized, depending not only upon the patient's age, but also upon her racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and cultural background.
