Changes In Cigarette Smoking Habits Among Physicians 1959-1965

It is evident from the number of studies of physicians' smoking habits over the past 15 years, that fewer physicians smoke now than they did formerly. It is also probable that physicians have been a vital force in persuading their patients to cut down or cut out cigarette smoking and will continue to influence the public. The most influential in this respect are those who have successfully quit smoking themselves. Will the percentage of physicians who are cigarette smokers continue to decrease? This is uncertain. There are probably a certain number of physicians who, like many nonphysicians, are so addicted to smoking that they never may be able to quit cigarette smoking, even though convinced that smoking is harmful to their health.
