Present Role of Cytology in Cancer Detection and Diagnosis (Exclusive of Uterine Cancer)

William M. Christopherson M.D.1

1 Professor and Chairman, Department of Pathology, University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, Kentucky.

Cytology is useful in the diagnosis of cancer in many areas of the body. At this moment it would appear to have limited application for early cancer detection on a mass screening basis. In order to obtain optimum cytologic diagnosis, greater detail must be paid to the obtaining of the specimen. Cytology is still a young, largely undeveloped discipline; it will not realize its full potential for years to come.
