1. The paraneoplastic syndromes represent distant effects on many organ systems found in association with a diversity of tumor types in man.
2. A possible pathogenetic hypothesis is presented. It has the benefits of fitting many of the syndromes described and allowing a search for confirmatory syndromes, but lacks animal supporting data and does not cover a number of known syndromes.
3. The principal concepts are related to retained or repressed synthetic activity of tumors in:
a. synthetic products which characterize other mature cells of common embryologic anlagen.
b. antigenic activities which cause autosensitive responses by the host immune system.
c. characteristic distortions of normal syntheses in tumors arising in bursal and thymic lymphoid tissue
