Effective doses of radiation for oral cancer produce changes which increase the vulnerability of the jaws to infection pathways provided by the teeth. Proper management of oral care prior to, during, and following irradiation therapy for oral cancer will contribute significantly to a reduction in morbidity, as well as to increased patient comfort and the prevention of subsequent oral disease.
If sound teeth are left in mouths irridiated for oral cancer, an obligation is assumed by the therapy team for the intensified program outlined for the conservation of oral health. If a patient will not cooperate, alternative or more radical management of dental hazards should be followed.
