Data voluntarily submitted to the NCDB by 597 hospitals throughout the US
indicate marked variations in the type of surgery used for the treatment of
breast cancer. Patients in New England with early stage breast cancer are
much more likely to be treated with partial mastectomy than are patients in
the East South Central or West North Central regions.
