The Breast Cancer Detection Demonstration Project was initiated 25 years
ago to demonstrate the feasibility of large-scale screening for breast
cancer. A retrospective view shows that it has more than fulfilled its
mission; among other important accomplishments it has significantly
advanced both the notion and science of population-based breast cancer
screening and provided a huge data base for epidemiologic research.
