Self-Care Activities for the Person with Nausea and Vomiting

From the American Cancer Society

Nausea and vomiting are the most dreaded adverse side effects among patients undergoing cancer treatment. In addition to the prescription medications available to treat these symptoms, there are steps patients themselves can take to maintain a certain level of comfort. The American Cancer Society recommends the following self-care activities for the alleviation of nausea and vomiting taken from the NCCN/ACS Nausea and Vomiting Treatment Guidelines for Patients with Cancer:

  1. Eat foods and drink beverages that were easy for you or made you feel better when you had the flu or morning sickness (e.g., bland foods, sour candy, dry crackers).
  2. Do NOT eat your favorite foods when nauseated.
  3. Do NOT eat fatty or fried foods, very spicy, or very sweet foods when nauseated.
  4. Eat small, frequent meals.
  5. Restrict fluids with meals.
  6. Eat food cold or at room temperature.
  7. Have someone else make the meals if you are nauseated.
  8. Keep your mouth clean and do oral care after each episode of vomiting.
  9. Wear loose fitting clothes.
  10. Have fresh air with a fan or window open.
  11. Limit sounds, sights, and smells that cause nausea and vomiting.
  12. Call your doctor or nurse if your nausea and vomiting are not controlled.
