From the Editors

Starting with this issue, we will be publishing full-text HTML articles and other content to the CA Web site in advance of the printed version of the journal in a new feature called CA First Look. This feature is intended to provide CA's content to our readers as quickly as possible. The online publication date is posted on each HTML article and is the date of record for publication. Readers should be aware that content published in CA First Look is the final version that has been peer-reviewed, revised, edited, and approved by the authors. When a complete issue of CA is posted online, the issue's content is removed from the CA First Look index and moved to the table of contents for that issue, at which point the articles will be available as PDFs.

    "CANCER STATISTICS, 2008"

Every year since 1967, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has published the annual "Cancer Statistics" article in CA. During this period, clinicians have turned to this article for a concise summary of the most up-to-date cancer incidence, mortality, and survival data, as well as estimates of new cancer cases and deaths for the current year based on incidence data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program of the National Cancer Institute and mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Due to a delayed release of mortality data from the NCHS, we regret that "Cancer Statistics, 2008" will not appear in this issue, but in a future issue. The annual "Cancer Statistics" article continues to be one of the most important articles published in CA. We are working closely with NCHS staff to get it published as soon as possible.

    "GUIDELINES FOR THE EARLY DETECTION OF CANCER"

Every year since 2000, the ACS has published an article on our "Guidelines for the Early Detection of Cancer." These articles, especially in the past several years, have included an overview of current guidelines, a review of any guideline revisions made during the prior calendar year, a summary of recent research relevant to early detection of cancer, and population-based information on prevalence of testing. Although this article has usually appeared in our January/February issue, this year it will appear later so that it will incorporate the new colorectal screening guidelines when they are published.
