 Cancer Screening in the...

Every year since 1967, the American Cancer Society (ACS) has published an annual Cancer Statistics article in CA. Clinicians have turned to this article for a concise summary of the most up-to-date cancer incidence, mortality, and survival data, as well as estimates of new cancer cases and deaths for the current year based on incidence data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program of the National Cancer Institute and mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Through 2005, this article invariably appeared in our January/February issue. Since 2006, the publication date has varied somewhat, depending on when mortality data are released from NCHS. We regret that "Cancer Statistics, 2010" will not appear in this issue. However, this article will be published online ahead of print as soon as possible and in print in the next available issue.

 Cancer Screening in the...

Every year since 2000, the ACS has published an article on "Cancer Screening in the United States: A Review of Current American Cancer Society Guidelines." These articles, especially in the past several years, have included an overview of current guidelines, a review of any guideline revisions made during the prior calendar year, a summary of recent research relevant to the early detection of cancer, and population-based information regarding the prevalence of testing. Although this article has usually appeared in our January/February issue, this year it will appear later so that it can incorporate revised guidelines for the early detection of prostate cancer when they are published later this year.

Sincerely,

Ted Gansler, MD, MBA
